How to Break Down Large Goals into Smaller Achievable Goals
By Renee Scattergood
Before reading this article, you may want to consider reading and implementing the information in my article What are Your Ultimate Goals? as this is the second part of that article.
Now that you know where you want to be in 5 years, it’s time to put together a plan that will help you turn your dreams into reality. Again it’s very important that you write all of this down and read it regularly. This will help you to stay motivated and accountable.
The first thing you need to determine is how much money, time and other resources you’ll need in order to accomplish your Ultimate Goals. For instance, if you want to build a house, you’ll need a certain amount of money for a down payment and an income that will support your mortgage payments.
I imagine most of your goals will require money as a resource, so I’ll be using that in my example, but you will need to break down each of your goals in a similar way. Let’s say, for instance, you determine that you need to be making $120,000 a year in order for you to achieve your ultimate goals. And more than that, you decide that after 5 years you want to be making $600,000 a year. So that means you will need to increase your income by $120,000 a year.
Looks like a daunting job now, which is why most people never make it beyond this point, but when you break it down into smaller bits, it suddenly becomes more achievable. So in order to be making $120k a year, you need to determine how much you need to be making a quarter, a month, and a week (and a day if you really want to get down to the nitty gritty.
So in the first year you need to be making $120k a year, which is $30k a quarter, which is $10k a month, which is approximately $2500 a week, which is just over $350 a day. If the amount you come up with for yourself still seems daunting to you at this point, and you really don’t think you can achieve it, you might want to consider revamping your Ultimate Goals. You can still have it as an Ultimate Goal, but not necessarily something to be achieved in the next 5 years. Remember, we want your goals to be achievable, so don’t stick with a goal that seems impossible to you.
If however you feel the figures you’ve come up with for yourself are doable, then it’s time to move on to the next step. Now that you know where your income needs to be, you need to determine how you are going to acquire this income. If you are a Network Marketer, you need to figure out how many people you need in your downline to make the amount you need each year. If you do niche marketing, you need to determine how many products and/or niche websites you need to set up. Same thing goes for direct marketing and affiliate marketing.
Once you know what you need to be doing in order to get the income, you can start putting a plan of action together. First break it down into quarters. What do you need to do be doing every three months? Then you break it down monthly and weekly, and then from there you can start putting together daily tasks to do.
By breaking it down in this way, you simplify the process. Instead of looking at the big picture and feeling overwhelmed, you’ve worked out simple daily tasks that can be easily accomplished. As long as you continuously complete your daily and weekly tasks, you will succeed.
Keep in mind too that you many need to tweak your goals and tasks every so often and that’s okay too. Sometimes you’ll find that what you’re doing isn’t working or you’ll get overwhelmed or overworked because you put too much on your plate. It’s okay to rework your goals to lighten the load, in fact it’s recommended. After all, if you can’t complete your goals, then you’re setting yourself up for failure. It’s better to pace yourself and take more time to accomplish your goals than it is to overwhelm yourself and burn out.
